The Managing Title VI and Related Issues track is designed for practitioners who wish to develop knowledge and skills to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, especially in student conduct settings. This track may be appropriate for professionals at all levels of student conduct and adjacent work.
As a result of participating in the Managing Title VI and Related Issues track, participants will (including but not be limited to):
Understand Title VI Fundamentals
• Gain a comprehensive understanding of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including its scope, purpose, and legal implications in student conduct settings.
Identify Discrimination Under Title VI
• Recognize and assess incidents of race, color, or national origin discrimination and their impact on students and institutional policies.
Navigate Institutional Responsibilities
• Learn the obligations of educational institutions under Title VI, including compliance requirements, reporting duties, and proactive measures to prevent discrimination.
Apply Title VI in Student Conduct Processes
• Develop skills to integrate Title VI considerations into student conduct investigations, hearings, and resolutions while ensuring fairness and equity.
Address Intersectionality and Related Issues
• Examine how Title VI interacts with other civil rights protections (e.g., Title IX, ADA) and how to manage overlapping concerns in student conduct cases.
Enhance Investigation and Resolution Skills
• Build competencies in conducting impartial investigations, gathering evidence, and implementing appropriate resolutions in compliance with Title VI.
Develop Preventative Strategies
