Virtual Mini-Tracks

ASCA recognizes the diverse professional needs of its members when it comes to content, cost, and time commitment. As a result, the Donald D. Gehring Academy offers Mini-Tracks: virtual, one-day sessions that take place on Monday, July 21 following the in-person Academy.

Academic Integrity

The Academic Integrity Mini-Track will explore all aspects of academic honesty conduct cases – from proactive education (for both students and faculty) to sanctioning (both academic penalty and conduct consequences), as well as crafting good policy. Other topics addressed will be artificial intelligence, training of hearing officers and panels and creating strong partnerships with academic units.

CAS Standards for Conduct

In this current climate, it is important for student conduct offices to be able to show that programs and services are meeting industry standards. This session will show how CAS Standards can be used as an approach for continuous improvement and to advance your programs and services through its use in mission improvement, position creation, office safety protocols, budgeting, learning outcome development and more. Participants will develop plans to use CAS Standards for position descriptions, sanction outcomes, office missions, and overall program improvement.

Community Colleges

This interactive mini track is designed for practitioners working in the community college setting and includes topics and trends unique to student conduct in that setting. This includes identifying strategies for working as a one-person or multi-functional unit; case trends specific to community colleges; developing strategies for a multipartial approach that incorporates both care and accountability; and leveraging and maximizing resources in resource-constrained environments. This session will allow for colleagues to learn from one another through practical, hands-on applications, and to build their networks of other community college practitioners.

Complex Investigation & Report Writing

This mini-track will focus on complex investigations and the report writing that these investigations may require. Big picture process overviews for investigations for sexual misconduct cases, individual student cases, and student organization cases will be emphasized. Key concepts in report assessment, investigation planning, partnerships, and report writing and distribution will be covered. Participants will be able to engage and practice as we go along through case studies and small group discussions. This mini track is appropriate for personnel working with report intake, investigation, and report-writing processes, as well as those who supervise individuals with these responsibilities.

Conducting Research for Student Conduct

This mini-track is designed to support scholar-practitioners looking to engage in research into student conduct administration. The mini-track will include overviews of research concepts and methodologies, information about the relationship between research and student conduct practice, and a discussion about how to work with ASCA to engage in your research. Whether you have engaged in research before (as a doctoral student or scholar-practitioner) or are excited to get into it, this mini-track will provide critical material to consider throughout the research process.

Effective Sanctioning

Ready to move beyond generic sanctions? Join us for a dynamic, day-long workshop designed for college student conduct officers eager to enhance their sanctioning practices. This session will focus on developing effective, educational, restorative, and personalized sanctions that foster student accountability and growth. Learn practical strategies, explore real case studies, and leave equipped with tools to transform your conduct process into a more meaningful, student-centered experience.

Informal Resolution for Title IX/Sexual Misconduct

This mini-track provides an in-depth exploration of Informal Resolution under Title IX. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the Informal Resolution process, including its purpose, guiding principles, and implementation. Key topics covered include: an overview of the regulations, the benefits of Informal Resolution, and best practices. Through interactive presentations, case studies, and guided discussions, attendees will develop the knowledge and skills to effectively utilize Informal Resolution to address Title IX-related concerns on their campuses. This course is designed for Title IX coordinators, investigators, student conduct professionals, and others responsible for implementing Informal Resolution under Title IX.

Mediation Basics

This mini-track offers foundational training in mediation, equipping participants with the tools to facilitate productive conversations between individuals or groups in conflict. Participants will explore the nature of conflict, the role of mediation within the broader spectrum of conflict resolution strategies, and the step-by-step process for conducting a mediation session. The course also includes guidance on accessing additional training and resources for deeper skill development. This mini-track is ideal for professionals working in student conduct, residence life, or dean of students offices who are seeking practical approaches to resolving interpersonal and organizational conflict.

One-Person Conduct Offices

This mini-track is designed for practitioners working as a one-person conduct office or as the solo conduct practitioner in a multi-functional unit. The mini track will focus on topics and trends related to student conduct in this unique environment, including strategies for managing conduct work, cultivating partnerships with on- and off-campus resources, utilizing assessment to showcase work and advocate for support, and developing self-care plans. The important message of this mini-track is to always remember that even if you are a shop of one, you are never alone!

Training Conduct Boards

This mini track provides an overview of effective practices for training student conduct hearing board members, including students, faculty, and staff. Topics include designing engaging training sessions, setting and clarifying student conduct hearing board expectations, and developing board members’ critical decision-making skills. This mini track is appropriate for professionals responsible for conduct board oversight and facilitation, as well as those seeking to strengthen their institution’s student conduct hearing board processes.

Threat Assessment (Partnership with NACCOP)

This virtual mini-track provides an overview of threat assessment trends and research, threat assessment principles and management, and the benefits and challenges of threat assessment teams. An in-depth look at a national case will be included. This mini-track is appropriate for individuals who are members of, work with, or have an interest in threat assessment teams. This session is offered as part of a strategic partnership between ASCA and NACCOP.
